E-wheelchair simulator for learning control and improving driving safety using VR (Virtual Reality)

For people who are dependent on an e-wheelchair for their mobility, either from birth or due to an acquired disability, competent handling of the e-wheelchair is crucial for safety when using the aid at home, in road traffic and during leisure activities. This requires training at the beginning. The closer this wheelchair training is to reality, the safer the person concerned will feel which can also reduce the risk of accidents.

In recent years, the possibilities of virtual reality have added a new dimension to simulation technology. What could previously "only" be followed on the screen can now be brought much closer to the real world with a VR simulator - at home, in the public environment or even on the road.

Project objective

The aim of the project is the conceptual design and technical implementation of a virtual e-wheelchair simulator using current VR technology to enable people with disabilities of all ages to learn and train e-wheelchair control. Ultimately, the aim is to enable those affected to live their mobility as independently and comprehensively as possible - with the aim that movement in public spaces and in road traffic can also be safely mastered. In addition, those affected can demonstrate their ability to control an e-wheelchair to supporting bodies such as health insurance companies and insurance companies and simplify the approval process.

The programme offers comprehensive VR training in various situations (driving in the home, driving in the protected area of a facility and outdoor facilities, driving on the road and in road traffic, training in everyday situations such as using a lift and public transport) to learn and consolidate the handling of the e-wheelchair as well as special requirements and traffic-relevant rules of conduct. In the definition of the training situations and all aspects relevant to traffic safety as well as the evaluation, the expertise is brought in by the Road Safety Research KFV as project partner.
